Kashmiri Apple Kul brings smile on Anuwarul Islam face

The new variety of Kashmiri apple kul cultivated in the district has attracted all palm farmers for its big size, mouth-watering taste and fair price this year. It was farmed in Kishoreganj for the first time, said Dr. Mohit Kumer Dey, Deputy Director (In-charge) of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in the district.

This variety looks like a middle size apple. Its colour is red on light yellow and green. Its taste is better than other varieties like bau kul and Thai kul. Its size is larger than the two varieties. 

Anuwarul Islam a young man from Khama village of Egarosindur Union under Pakundia upazila in the district with a genius idea did not pursue the life of a pen pusher. He started innovative project of Kashmiri Apple Kul in 20 decimal land. He spents about 40 thousand for attending and fencing the plot and expect that he will sell this Kashmiri variety at Tk. 3 lakh. 

The entire orchard was a display of red and green, showing off the splendor of the fruit. Even Anuwarul Islam's face shows a flicker of smile, with hopes of large profits. For him, this is his big break in employment, nutrition and food.

Anuwarul Islam said, Apple plum and Bau Kul are sold at Tk. 30 to 70 per kg to the whole seller while this Kashmiri Apple Kul will be sold Tk. 140 to 160 per kg. Owner Anuwarul Islam told to this correspondent seedlings were brought from neighboring India by Sub-Assistant Agricultural Officer of Pakundia upazila Hamimul Hoque Shohag.

Sub-Assistant Agricultural Officer of Pakundia upazila Hamimul Hoque Shohag said, Kashmiri Kul can turn fate around as it is possible to earn Tk2 to 2.5 lakh by investing around Tk. 20 to 30 thousand. Kashmiri Kul thrive best in a sunlight, high and well kept land. The seeds need to be planted approximately 5 to 6 feet apart and comparatively less prone to diseases.

Kishoreganj Sadar Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Tajrina Taiyaba said Kashmiri Kul are delicious fruits, with plenty of Vitamin-C and extremely useful for the human body.
