Kashipur Zamindar House on the verge of collapse, locals demand restoration

Kashipur Zamindar House in Jibannagar Upazila of Chuadanga district is on the verge of destruction due to carelessness, neglect and lack of renovation. The architectural structure of the house, along with the valuable items, are being destroyed due to lack of preservation. If government maintenance is possible, this house will have a place in the pages of history. If all facilities are ensured, the house will be developed as a tourist area around it.

The Zamindar house is located in Kashipur village, just seven kilometers from Jibannagar city. This zamindar house is especially known as the memorial site of the popular writer, novelist, storyteller and fiction writer Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. He while visiting this Zamindar Bari during his visit to his uncle came home, wrote his popular short story 'Mahesh'.

Locals said that in 1861, the landlord's house was built in Kashipur village in KDK union of Jibannagar upazila. Zamindar Vinay Kumar Majumdar lived in this house. His zamindari and rule covered a large part of the area. Before the partition of the country it belonged to Nadia district of West Bengal. Vinay Kumar Majumdar exchanged 1200 bigha land with the ancestors of the current residents and left with his family. Bhairava river flows by the house. At present the zamindar house is in a dilapidated condition due to neglect, neglect and lack of renovation.

Abdul Quader of Kashipur village said that the landlord Binoy Kumar Majumdar was very tyrannical. He oppressed the subjects. Innocent citizens were always in fear. Currently, the Kashipur Zamindar house of Mahesh Sagar is on the verge of destruction due to lack of renovation. If it can be preserved, it will be developed as a tourist area. The house will be a witness of history. The house has various items including golaghar, well, couch, sofa, table, dining table. There is a special motor for extracting water from the ground. In front of the main gate of the house there is a banyan tree which is one of the biggest trees in the area. Tourists flock from different districts of the country to see the house every day.

Bajlur Rahman of Kashipur village said that Zamindar Binoy Kumar Majumdad's nephew was Saratchandra Chatrapadhyay, a popular writer, novelist, storyteller and fiction writer. Once he came to visit the zamindar's house in the village of Kashipur, uncle's house, and was shocked to learn about the oppression and torture of the subjects. Mahesh wrote a short story about this. In the story, Saratchandra Chatterjee depicts the sad scenes of the poor farmer Gafur, the domesticated cow Mahesh and the little girl Ameena, and shows the dark chapter of the Zamindar system.

Currently two brothers named Abeel and Kabeel live in the house. They said staying at home is too risky, yet we are living here. Saratchandra spent a lot of time here. He wrote a story about one such incident that his uncle zamindar Vinay Kumar Chattopadhyay used to brutally torture the common people. Mahesh story is short but popular. And for this story, people from home and abroad know the name of Kashipur village of Jibannagar upazila. Some of the things used by the Zamindars at that time are here, so tourists from different parts of the country come to visit the house.

Mostafizur Rahman, a college student who came from Khulna to see the Zamindar's house, said that he got to know about the Kashipur zamindar's house through Mahesh's story written by Saratchandra. Long hoped to see the house. It feels good to be here today. However, the house has lost its beauty due to its dilapidated condition. It would be better if it was reformed by the government.

A local named Hasan Niloy said that Kashipur Zamindar Bari is a popular place in the area. Saratchandra wrote his fictional Mahesh story in this house. Many tourists come from far and wide to see the house. Many turn back due to lack of facilities for tourists.

KDK Union Parishad Chairman Khairul Bashar Shiplu said, Kashipur Zamin­dar house is actually a traditional place of our upazila. Here the country's most notable story Mahesh was written and the Kashipur zamindar house is Sarat­chandra Chatto­padhyay's maternal uncle's house. It can be preserved if administrative measures are taken to reform it.

Jibannagar upazila executive officer. Ariful Islam said that there is a zamindar house in Kashipur village. After leaving the country, the tyrannical zamindar Vinay Kumar Majumdar abolished the zamindar system. 

The subjects began to live independently. The house will be preserved and developed as a tourist area.
