Kabita gets AL ticket for Sirajganj by-polls

Merina Jahan Kabita, an executive member of the ruling Awami League’s central committee, has been nominated as the candidate of ruling Awami League for Sirajganj-6 constituency by-polls scheduled to be held on November 2.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the parliamentary nomination Board and Local Government Representatives’ Nomination Board of the Awami League. The meeting was held at the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s official residence Ganabhaban on Thursday.

Awami League president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the meeting as the chairperson of the Awami League Parliamentary and Local Government Representative Nomination Board.

As per the schedule, the last date for nomination papers’ submission for the aspirants is October 10, while the nomination papers will be scrutinised by the commission officials on October 11, the date for filing appeal has been fixed from October 12-14. While the last date for withdrawal of candidacy is October 17.

The parliament secretariat announced the parliamentary seat vacant following the death of former parliament member Hasibur Rahman Shawpan on September 2.

Sirajganj-6 constituency is formed comprising with Shahjadpur upazila.

Former lawmaker Hasibur Rahman Shawpan, who also was an upazila Awami League president, had won the tenth and eleventh parliament elections from this constituency.

Party sources said, a total of 11 aspirants had collected and submitted forms for nominations to the Sirajganj-6 constituency. 

Meanwhile, the meeting also finalised the party’s nominations to the aspirants for the elections to 848 union parishads, two upazila parishads and 10 municipalities.

According to sources, a total of 4,458 aspirants of Awami League had applied for the posts chairmen of 848 UPs while 53 candidates had collected and submitted forms for the nominations to 10 municipalities and 19 candidates for two upazila elections.
