People may forget the bullet-riddled photos of martyr Abu Sayeed at some point, but these photos will remind history, said Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain.
He said this while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of a three-day photo exhibition titled ‘July Revolution on Camera’ at the VIP Lounge of the Chattogram Press Club on Saturday morning.
CCC Mayor said, “We call July-August a 36-day revolution. But the disappearances, murders, and extrajudicial killings that took place during this period are not just 36 days but a history of 16 years of torture. It would be an injustice to forget the martyrs during that time.”
AKM Mohsin, President of the Bangladesh Photojournalist Association, also spoke at the event. He said, ‘We have deep respect for those who were martyred in the fight to establish democracy. In the last 15 and a half years, many people have lost their lives due to disappearances, murders and political persecution. The July Revolution was a roar against that injustice.’
He said that 80 people have been ‘freed from fascists’ from the National Press Club so far. The process is still ongoing. I don’t know how many fascists have been freed from the Chattogram Press Club? Because if these fascists cannot be freed, the blood of the martyrs will be in vain.
The discussion was presided over by Jahidul Karim Kochi, member secretary of the interim committee of the Chattogram Press Club. The moderator was Mohammad Hossain, the convener of the July Revolution on camera.
Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's personal photographer Nuruddin Ahmed, former president of Bangladesh Photojournalist Association Bulbul Ahmed, The People's View editor Osman Gani Mansur, Kaler Kantho Ctg Bureau chief Mustafa Naeem, NTV Bureau chief Shamsul Haque Hydari, General secretary of the organization Babul Talukder, General secretary of Chattogram Metropolitan Union of Journalists (CMUJ) Saleh Noman, press club member Mia Mohammad Arif and President of Chattogram Photojournalist Association Md. Mostafizur Rahman, among others also spoke at the event. About 160 photos from Dhaka and Chattogram have been included in this exhibition. The photos show various images of the political turmoil of July-August, disappearances, murders and torture.
