Juliet lays 52 eggs in Sundarbans

This year Juliet laid 52 eggs at the Karamjal Wildlife Breeding Centre in the Eastern Sundarbans. On Friday morning, the crocodile Juliet laid her eggs on the bank of the pond of the crocodile project of the center. Juliet laid eggs a total of 15 times. Earlier last year, Juliet laid 44 eggs.

Karamjal Wildlife Breeding and Tourism Officer in Charge (OC) Md Azad Kabir said that on Friday morning, 52 eggs of Juliet were collected from the pond of the project and 14 of them were kept in Juliet's house for hatching, 26 in the old incubator and 12 in the new incubator. The eggs will hatch in the next 85 to 90 days. 

Azad Kabir further said that at present there are 195 crocodiles in Karamjal crocodile breeding center. Among them, two female crocodiles named Juliet and Pilpil and a male crocodile named Romeo are breeding crocodiles in Karamjal.The crocodile breeding center was set up in Karamjal in 2000 with the aim of breeding an endangered saltwater species of crocodiles. 

The forest department has released 97 adult crocodiles from the breeding center to the rivers of the Sundarbans.
