Jubo League leader held with arms in Cumilla

A joint force led by the members of Bangladesh Army conducted a drive at Burichang upazila of Cumilla on early Friday and detained a Jubo League leader with large amount of weapons, a firearm and cash.

The detainee was identified as Jonny Hossain, 35. He is the nephew of former Burichang Upazila Parishad Chairman and Upazila unit Awami League general secretary Akhlak Haider. Moreover, his other two maternal uncles, Tarik Haider and Lalon Haider, are the former member of Cumilla Zilla Parishad and Moynamoti Union Parishad Chairman respectively.

The drive was conducted in Sinduria Para area under Moynamoti union in Burichang upazila and Johnny Hossain was detained on early Friday.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Burichang Police Station Azizul Haque confirmed the matter on Friday noon.

Johnny, who introduced himself a Jubo League leader, controlled the transportation sector for a long time through the political influence of his uncles. He owned a bus service named ‘Farzana Trasportation.’ After the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, Johnny went into hiding.

One foreign air gun, 14 locally made swords, one iron-made disk, three knives, five sticks and Tk 4,50,000 cash were recovered from his possession, said the police.

Regarding this matter, Burichang Police Station OC Azizul Haque said there was a previous case against the detainee Johnny. Moreover, a new case will be filed against him under the Arms Act and he will be sent to court.
