Juba keen to work with Dhaka over flood control

Sudanese minister joins meeting at BWDB

A South Sudan delegation led by Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management Minister of the country Albino Akoi Atak Mayom is visiting Bangladesh. 

During the visit, the Sudanese minister along with his delegation members joined a meeting at the conference room of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) at Pani Bhaban in Dhaka city on Sunday.  

The delegation later visited the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) of BWDB for observing the activities of the flood forecasting systems of Bangladesh.

The meeting at Pani Bhaban was held on knowledge and experience sharing of Flood Forecasting and Early Warning services. Director General, ADG (Planning), Chief Engineer-Hydrology and BWDB Officials were present at the meeting and took part in the discussion.

Q/A. Officials from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and DoEnv were also present at the meeting and took part in the discussion. Executive Engineer of FFWC presented the FFWC and Flood Early Warning Activities and structural measures of flood management of Bangladesh. Representatives from FAO and RIMES were also present. 

DG, ADG (planning), CE Hydrology Team Leader RIMES-Bangladesh and others contributed to the meeting and answered few questions on Flood Disaster Management, FFWC activities, Flood Early Warning Services of Bangladesh and DRR activities of Bangladesh.

The delegate highly appreciated the FFWC, Flood Early Warning Services and DRR activities and success of Bangladesh. Future possibilities of cooperation and technical assistance from Bangladesh were discussed.

South Sudan is interested to work with Bangladesh on Flood Forecasting and Flood Management, as flood is a big problem for them and about 70 percent area of South Sudan often flooded in the rainy season and causing huge losses and damages.

DG, BWDB thanked the Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management Minister of Sudan and the delegate for visiting the BWDB and hope for the future cooperation and willingness to extend technical support from BWDB Bangladesh in this area. The DG-BWDB concluded the meeting.
