Meanwhile, the admission tests for the 53rd batch, 2023–2024 academic year are just beginning. Using the university's official website, the application process opens on January 14, 2024.
While many other public universities have concluded their first-semester examinations, the 52nd batch at Jahangirnagar University is still awaiting the commencement of classes. Surprisingly, the administration has already organized the admission test for the next batch, the 53rd batch, scheduled for February 22, 2023.
University insiders emphasize the importance of proper planning before initiating the admission test for any batch. However, concerns are raised over the administration's alleged neglect in starting classes for the 52nd batch, even seven months after their admission test.
The university administration contends that a plan was in place to initiate classes in a new hall, avoiding the common room for the 52nd batch. Unfortunately, the opening of the new halls has been hindered by a shortage of manpower, delaying the start of classes.
According to the university registrar's office, the admission test for the 2022–23 academic year took place from June 18 to June 24. Despite this, classes could not commence until five months later, with online classes beginning on November 30.
Contrary to the promises made in the annual performance agreement with the University Grants Commission (UGC) for the 2023–24 academic year, the university failed to start classes on the specified dates. The university faces potential marks deductions in the UGC Performance Index Standard 1 if classes do not commence by November 30, prompting the administration to hastily introduce online classes.
Amidst these challenges, students from the freshest batch highlight difficulties in attending online classes regularly due to financial constraints associated with internet costs. Some even face bullying from locals, casting doubts on the legitimacy of their university admission.
Looking ahead, the university has announced that admission tests for the academic year 2023–24 will take place from February 22 to February 29, with online applications accepted from January 14 to January 31. The administration aims to conduct tests in seven units, with specific faculties assigned to each unit.
While the Vice-Chancellor's office refrained from commenting on the situation, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nurul Alam acknowledged the uncertainty regarding the start date for the 52nd batch's classes. Despite ongoing efforts to address manpower shortages and initiate classes within the month, the delay is anticipated to have no impact on the subsequent batch.
