JU Prof Himel Barkat dies

Professor and poet Himel Barkat of Jahangirnagar University (JU) Bangla department died of cardiac arrest at a hospital in the capital, early this morning. He was 42.  

He breathed his last around 4.30am at Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital while undergoing treatment, Prof Dr. Nahid Haque, chairman of Bangla department, told the Bangladesh Post. 

“Himel Barkat had a heart attack on Saturday morning while taking online classes. Soon after he was admitted to Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital in critical condition. Later, he died after being taken to life support," said Dr. Nahid Haque. 

Prof Himel Barkat is the younger brother of noted Bangladeshi poet Rudra Mohammad Shahidullah.

The untimely death of Professor Himel Barkat has cast a shadow of mourning over the university. 

Teachers, students and vice-chancellor of the university expressed their grief over his death and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul.

“The untimely death of Himel Barkat is an irreparable loss to Bengali literature and the university,” said JU VC Prof Dr. Farzana Islam in a condolence message.
