JU celebrates golden jubilee

Jahangirnagar University (JU) celebrated its 50th founding anniversary on Tuesday on the university campus in an unostentatious manner amid the corona epidemic.  Marking the day, JU authorities have taken a daylong programme. 

The programme was inaugurated by hoisting the national flag and JU flag and releasing balloons in front of the Business Studies faculty in the morning. JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Farzana Islam inaugurated the event through videoconferencing.     

Later, a virtual reminiscing programme was held with the VC, Pro-VCs, faculty members, former and current students of the university. The participates shared their memories of university life at the event.

At around 6.30 pm, a virtual cultural programme jointly organised by Student Welfare and Counselling Centre and Teacher-Student Center (TSC) was held. 

Besides, Jahangirnagar University Alumni Association (JUAA) celebrated the golden jubilee programme at the university main gate area by hoisting national, university and alumni association flags and releasing 50 balloons.  Former Vice-Chancellor and president of the JUAA Prof Dr Sharif Anamul Kabir, former Register and general secretary of JUAA Abu Bakkar Siddique, former student and VC of Mawlana Bhasani Science and Technology University Prof Md Aladdin, senate member of JU Sheikh Monwar Hossain were present among others at the event.  

It is mentionable that Jahangirnagar University was founded on August 20 in 1970. It formally started its academic activities as a fully residential university on January 12 in 1971, with 4 departments, 21 teachers, 150 students, and three residential halls. 

Currently, the university has 34 departments, 4 institutions, 718 teachers and more than 14 thousand students.
