Like the Jatiya Party, the main opposition in the National Parliament, another opposition party Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) has also demanded enactment of laws for the reconstitution of the Election Commission as per Section 118 of the Constitution.
The JSD made the demand at a dialogue with President Abdul Hamid at the Bangabhaban Wednesday afternoon.
The party also sought initiative of the President for the reconstitution of the EC as well as a permanent solution in this regard.
“Centring the reconstitution of the EC, the nation has to face an embarrassing situation after every five years. Therefore, we hope the President will play a role in the enactment of laws so that we do not face the embarrassing situation after every five years”, said JSD president Hasanul Huq Inu immediately after coming out of the Bangabhaban following the dialogue with the President.
Inu said at the dialogue with the President, they wanted a permanent solution on the reconstitution of the EC.
“The government is responsible for the enactment of laws and we hope the President will deliver instructions to the government for the enactment of laws”, he added.
Replying to a query, the JSD president said, although the laws are enacted by the National Parliament, the President is the protector of the Constitution and, therefore, he (the President) could take initiative in this regard.
Earlier, in the afternoon, at 4:00pm, a six-member delegation led by JSD president Hasanul Haq Inu entered Bangabhaban for the dialogue with President Abdul Hamid.
The Jatiya Party at the dialogue with the President on Monday proposed the enactment of a law as per the Constitution for the reconstitution of the EC.
Unless it is not possible to enact a new law due to time shortage, the party demanded the reconstitution of the EC through a Presidential Ordinance.
The dialogue kicked off on December 20 with exchanging views with the main opposition in parliament--Jatiya Party.
Hamid initiated the dialogue with registered political parties as the tenure of the current EC, under the leadership of Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda, ends on February 14.
