The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock suggested considering giving insurance facility to fishermen taking into account the helpless condition of their families in case of casualty during fishing on Sunday, reports BSS.

The parliamentary watchdog came up with the recommendation at its third meeting at the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Bhaban with its Chairman Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu in the chair, said a press release. Committee members State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Md Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru, Md. Shahidul Islam (Bakul), Shamima Akter Khanam and Kaniz Fatema Ahmed attended the meeting.

The committee observed that many families become helpless as many of the fishermen go missing, die and incur losses and some of them are abducted by pirates during fishing in the seas.

It recommended the ministry to implement the government’s programmes strictly to keep the fishermen away from catching immature fish to protect the mother-hilsha and Jatka.
