It has been decided to make ‘Joy Bangla’ the national slogan. A notification in this regard will be issued soon by the Cabinet Division.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the cabinet meeting joining virtually from her official residence Ganabhaban while her cabinet colleagues were present at the Cabinet Division of Bangladesh Secretariat on Sunday.
After the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam unveiled the information with journalists at the Secretariat.
“A considerable issue of making 'Joy Bangla' the national slogan came up in the cabinet. It has been discussed at the cabinet. There was also a judgment in the High Court in 2020, which stated 'Joy Bangla' will be considered as the national slogan.”
Necessary steps have to be taken in this regard. It was decided after a discussion at the cabinet that 'Joy Bangla' should be promoted as a national slogan with a circular from the cabinet. A notification will be issued very soon,” he added.
Khandker Anwarul Islam also said that the notification would be made within two to four days.
“Constitutional office bearers, all state officials and employees will say the slogan at the end of state or government ceremonies. All educational institutions, including madrasas, if they have any meeting-seminar, assembly or any kind of assembly, they have to utter the slogan 'Joy Bangla' there,” said the cabinet secretary.
He further said if there is an event, assembly, etc. either public or private, the slogan will be used. This is a decision of the cabinet.
In March 2020, the High Court (HC) ruled that 'Joy Bangla' will be the national slogan of Bangladesh. A High Court bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahsan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader passed the order on March 10 in 2020.
While announcing the verdict, the court observed: “Joy Bangla is the slogan of national unity. Joy Bangla is included in the Constitution as the slogan of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The slogan pays tribute to the historic March 7 speech.”
The court order stated Joy Bangla will be the national slogan of Bangladesh. Appropriate measures will be taken to ensure that on all national days and in appropriate cases, constitutional office bearers and all government officials should use the 'Joy Bangla' slogan at the end of their official speeches.
Furthermore, the students and teachers should use the slogan 'Joy Bangla' after the conclusion of the assembly in all educational institutions.
