Journo Rozina released from jail on bail

Journalist Rozina Islam was released from Kashimpur jail on Sunday afternoon following her granting bail by a Dhaka court in a case filed under the Official Secrets Act by health ministry.

According to Jailer Hosne Ara Bithi, Rozina Islam was released from the Kashimpur Women’s Prison around 4.15pm. She was freed immediately after receiving the court order, Bithi added.

After walking out of the jail, Rozina Islam vowed to keep on working as a journalist.

When journalists asked whether she will continue her profession as journalist after the incident, Rozina said, “Certainly I will be in the journalism.”

She also thanked all her fellow journalists, journalist leaders  and mass people who raised their voices for her release.

Earlier in the day, Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Baki Billah granted the bail upon bond of Tk 5,000. Subject to the submission of the journalist's passport, the bail was granted till July 15.

Earlier on Thursday, the court fixed Sunday for passing an order after hearing the bail petition virtually.

Rozina, reputed for her investigative journalism, was detained at the Secretariat for over five hours before being handed over to police on May 17.

Rozina captured photos of documents related to government negotiations with pharma firms to buy Covid-19 vaccines, according to case documents.

A First Investigation Report was filed against Rozina under the official secrects act and sections 379 and 411 of the penal code on a complaint filed by the Health Services Division at Shahbagh police station.

On May 18, a Dhaka court sent Rozina to jail after rejecting the police's demand for her five-day remand. She was taken to Kashimpur Central Women's Jail on the same day.
