A mobile court fined an online journalist, Abdul Rahman Labu in Thakurgaon on Sunday for spreading rumors about corona virus on Facebook. Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate Abdullah Al Mamun led the mobile court aand fined the journalist, confirmed Thakurgaon Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Tanvirul Islam.
The convicted Abdur Rahman Labu, 47, is the son of Khorshed Ali of Hajipara area in Thakurgaon town. He is the district correspondent of an online news portal and an assistant professor of a college.
OC Tanvirul Islam said, Abdur Rahman Labu spread rumors on his own timeline that a corona virus patient had been detected at Haider’s house in Hajipara area of Thakurgaon town. But no such thing has actually happened.
When the news spread, people in the city became terrified. Police raided the house of Labu and presented him before the mobile court after arresting him. The magistrate Abdullah Al Mamun fined the journalist Tk 1,000 and warned him not to spread any more rumors. Otherwise, a case will be filed against him under digital law.
It is important to note that even though 19 people have been tested for corona virus in Thakurgaon, there was no evidence of corona virus infection found yet in their bodies.
