Jagannath University (JnU) is located in Old Dhaka. Being located in this populous area of Dhaka, places around it are facing a lack of trees. Inside the university, the botanical garden of the Botany department serves as the lung of the university.

This botanical garden serves fresh air to the people in the campus. A sum of 100 species of plants is found in the garden. For the research purpose these plants are used.

By using the water body of plants the researchers produce new plants in the garden. Besides, for advanced research, an air-light controlled room has been built.

Medicinery plants are researched In that air-light controlled room. As the campus botanical garden is comparatively smaller than other campus botanical gardens, only the ongoing researched plants have got this place. Besides, some extinct and endangered plants are saved from extinction in this garden.

The Botany department students’ do research about various parts of a plant. They research all the plants’ physiology, flower configuration, reproduction,  genetic configuration of plants etc with the aid of lab tests.

In a special allotted place the thesis students do research on their topics. Their research topic is different from others for that purpose they are facilitated in that way.

Students said that to deepen research and to get an extinct and endangered plant they take help from Mirpur central botanical garden. Besides, Dhaka University botanical garden helps them to get the other plants to research as the JnU botanical garden is comparatively a small sized garden.

Professor Shahriar Ahmed, Chairman of the Botany Department is hopeful to overcome all the problems.

He said, "We lack the necessary space for common needs. Nevertheless, we strive to provide adequate facilities for the students. We have future plans for the Botanical Garden, which will further enhance research opportunities for students and contribute to the conservation of endangered plants."
