A Twitter post criticizing the live-action film How the Grinch Stole Christmas has been slammed by fans of Jim Carrey for disrespecting his Grinch.

A Twitter post that claimed How the Grinch Stole Christmas was a terrible live-action remake, has been slammed as disrespectful by Jim Carrey fans. How the Grinch Stole Christmas premiered in 2000 and is an adaptation of the Dr. Seuss children's book of the same name. The film follows the Grinch (Carrey), a reclusive, grouchy green creature who has been ostracized in his town of Whoville. One day, he decides to destroy Christmas for all of Whoville and bursts into town to steal everyone's Christmas gifts and decorations. However, his plans are challenged by the true Christmas spirit and the kindness he receives from Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen).

How the Grinch Stole Christmas received mixed reviews upon its release, as while Carrey received strong praise for his performance as the Grinch, alongside the costume and make-up work on set, the film was criticized for being too dark and having a poor plot. Nonetheless, How the Grinch Stole Christmas proved to be a large commercial success, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of 2000 and one of the highest-grossing holiday films of all time. Still, to this day, the debate rages on about how good this Christmas classic film is.

Twitter user @TealtheTetrapod sparked anger from Carrey fans when he Tweeted an image that labeled How the Grinch Stole Christmas as a "disastrous live-action movie." He lumped How the Grinch Stole Christmas with Super Mario Bros., comparing how both started as animated classics, then received poor live-action films, and then proceeded to receive a computer-animated remake from Illumination. Other Twitter users flocked to the Tweet, with many speaking out in defense of Carrey and his film. Check out some Tweets below:

Despite some mixed reviews, How the Grinch Stole Christmas has grown a cult following and has remained a solid Christmas classic. The film has become a holiday rewatch for several reasons, including its unique themes, strong costume design and make-up, and Carrey's performance as the Grinch. How the Grinch Stole Christmas was criticized by some for departing from the original story, however, the departure gave the film more depth by exploring how the Grinch became his reclusive, grouchy self because of the ostracization of WhoVille, as well as the overt commercialization of the holiday.

Additionally, the costumes, make-up, and set designs were quite vivid and stunning, allowing the film to truly create its own strange little Christmas world, very much in line with the designs of Dr. Seuss' source material. Lastly, Carrey's performance, as manic and chaotic as it was, added to the comedic tones and emotions of the film. While the film is undeniably odd and may not be quite what audiences expected, it was still a unique holiday film that appealed to children and certain film enthusiasts.
