Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD)-backed Vice President candidate Md Abidul Islam Khan has rejected the results of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election, terming them “planned fraud”.
However, his panel's GS candidate, Sheikh Tanvir Bari Hamim, the number two on the ticket, gracefully accepted the result, even as he referred to "some irregularities".
In a Facebook post around 2:30 am on Tuesday night (Wednesday morning), Khan wrote, “I guessed this result right after noon. Just put numbers as you like. I reject this staged drama.”
Khan, who contested for the VP post, alleged that the outcome was manipulated and did not reflect the actual votes cast by students.
By contrast, Hamim, in a status on his verified Facebook page around the same time, said: "If the students of Dhaka University think that this is their verdict, then I respect this verdict. I am waiting for the students' reaction."
He added: "Although there was a festive atmosphere in the voting ceremony that lasted from morning to afternoon today, irregularities were observed in some centers. Especially in the counting process, machine errors, fraud and manipulation were observed."
Meanwhile, hall-wise results of the DUCSU election began rolling out after 1.30am.
In Amar Ekushey and Sufia Kamal Halls, Vice President candidate Shadik Kayem, supported by the Shibir-backed Oikoboddho Shikkharthi Jote, secured a commanding lead with 1,914 votes.
His nearest rival, Md Abidul Islam Khan, received 564 votes.
