A writ petition has been filed in the High Court seeking directions to stop the activities of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) for removing stray dogs from the capital.
Actress Jaya Ahsan and two animal welfare organizations Sanctuary and People for Animal Welfare jointly filed the writ petition in public interest on Thursday (September 17). It is learned that a hearing on the writ may be held next week.
In the writ petition, the issue of validity of the activities of DSCC regarding transfer and dumping of dogs has been brought up. The writ petition has been filed against the concerned including DSCC.
According to the writ petition, according to Section 8 of the Animal Welfare Act-2019, no animal, including a stray dog, can be removed, transferred or thrown away.
However, there are allegations that stray dogs have been removed from TSC and Dhanmondi and dumped in Matuail by the verbal order of DSCC. Therefore, the validity of the DSCC's decision and activities regarding the transfer of dogs has been challenged in the writ petition.
