Jatka conservation week begins Mar 31

Jatka conservation week will be observed from March 31 to April 6 to create public awareness for the conservation of jatka and the development of hilsa resources of the country and to discourage fishermen from procuring jatka.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the National Task Force committee on Hilsa Resource Development at the conference room of the Fisheries Department at Matsya Bhaban in the capital on Sunday.

Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Mohammad Yamin Chowdhury presided over the meeting.

He said, “The importance of observing jatka conservation week is immense in protecting the country's hilsa resources. The people of the country need to work together for the conservation of jatka.”

Decisions were taken at the meeting to carry out various programmes at central and district-upazila level during jatka conservation week. 

These include press conferences, inaugural rallies, naval rallies and discussion events, talk shows, TVC and scroll promotions on the importance of protecting jatka in print and electronic media, distribution of poster-leaflets, sports competitions among fishermen, cultural events  and discussion meetings, mobile court drives and campaign for the protection of jatka and seminars on hilsa etc.

It may be mentioned that jatka conservation week is observed every year since 2007 to highlight the harmful aspects of illegal use of nets and the importance of protecting jatka in the development of hilsa and fishery resources to the people of the country.

Additional Secretaries of Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Taufiqul Arif and SM Ferdous Alam, Chairman of Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) Hemayet Hussain, Director General of the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute DR Yahya Mahmud and Deputy Director of Fisheries and Livestock Information Shefaul Karim were present at the meeting, among others.
