Janata Bank sees major success

Janata Bank Limited, the country's second largest state-owned commercial bank, has achieved remarkable success by making major progress in most of the financial and commercial indexes in 2018. Managing Director and CEO of the Bank, Abdus Salam Azad opined that the bank’ssuch a success was possible due to bringing down the rate of interest within single digit in line with the decision of the government following the strict regulations of the regulatory authority and bank board."

The volume of classified loan of our bank increased last year due to default of two clients of the bank. Even though, the bank has done better in major financial indices due to hard work of the bank officials as well as proper guidelines of the board", Abdus Salam Azad said. The remarks were made in the 12th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the bank at the JBL head office at Motijheel in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Chairman of the bank, Luna Shamsuddoha presided over the meeting. Additional Secretary, Bank and Financial Institutes Division, Md. Fazlul Haqque, Directors of the Bank, Sabera Islam, Masih Malik Chowdhury FCA, AK Fazlul Ahad, Md. Abul Kashem, Ajit Kumar Paul FCA, DMDs Md. Ismail Hossain, Md. Fazlul Haque, Md. Zikrul Haque and Tajul Islam, Company Secretary, Hossain Yeahia Chowdhury and CFO, AKM Shariat Ullah FCA were present in the AGM.

Chairman of the Banksaid turning the country into a middle income one within 2021 is no more a dream but a visible reality. Janata Bank is playing its part with due responsibility in the way of this transformation, she added. She said, JanataBank provides social safety net without taking any fee or chargeand the value of this service so far totals Tk 625 crore. Besides these, the bank has earned an operating profit of Tk 979 crore in the year 2018.

“With the spirit of building 'Digital Bangladesh', the bank has started online banking at all branches under the Core Banking Solution (CBS). For providing safe banking service, JBL is planning to form JB Computer Emergency response team so that all sorts of cyber crime can be prevented,” she added. Managing Director also said that the total asset of the bank stands at Tk 86,668 crore in 2018 which is 7.53 percent or Tk 6,069 crore more than the previous year’sfigure.
"In 2018, the import payment settled through the bank amounts at Tk 22,041 crore, while export worth Tk 11,468 crore and remittance Tk. 7,608 crore. Recovery of Tk 484 crore from classified loans and Tk. 34 crore from write off was possible in the same year,” he added.
