Country’s general people hailed the government for banning the politics of defeated evil forces of ‘71 – Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, its student wing Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, and all its associate bodies. Home Ministry’s Public Security Division issued a gazette notification in this regard on Thursday.

The Bangalis motivated by the spirit of their great War of Liberation and different social-cultural and political organisations had been demanding a ban on the politics of Jamaat and Shibir for more than three decades. Recently Jamaat-Shibir used the protesting students who were demanding quota reform in government jobs as their shield to unleash their reign of terror. They just used the students as their shield. We witnessed the savagery of militancy in the guise of anti-quota movement

According to the gazette notification, as the political party Jamaat- Shibir along with all its associate organisations were banned under clause 18(1) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009. We believe the banning of Jamaat-Shibir politics in Bangladesh has met the longstanding demand of the people.

With the spirit of the Liberation War, it is our national duty and moral obligation to retrieve the country from the clutch of religion-based and communal politics. Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s government had banned Jamaat-e-Islami for opposing Bangladesh’s independence, their collaboration with Pakistani occupation forces to kill 30 lakh people, and misusing religion for political purposes. However, after the assassination of Bangabandhu on August 15 in 1975, Jamaat-Shibir was rehabilitated in the country’s politics by the military dictator General Ziaur Rahman.

It is our national duty and

moral obligation to retrieve

 the country from the clutch

of religion-based and communal politics.

Apart from the general people, eminent citizens and different organisations, including Sector Commanders Forum-Muktijudda 71, Muktijoddha Oikya Parishad, Chhatra Sangram Parishad, Amra Muktijoddhar Santan, and Gourab 71, welcomed the government’s decision banning Jamaat-Shibir and all its front organisations.

We believe religion-based politics does not go with the spirit of the Liberation War having four fundamental policies: nationalism, socialism, democracy, and secularism. There can be religious organisations but doing politics using religion by them should not be allowed.

Country’s people motivated by the spirit of the War of Liberation termed the banning of Jamaat-Shibir a big victory.

The politics of Jamaat-Shibir is not only a threat to the security of Bangladesh but also to the entire South Asian region as the clique has links with regional and international terrorist groups, say experts. But only banning the politics of Jamaat and Shibir will not stop its terrorist activities.

Jamaat has many social organisations, NGOs, educational, financial institutions and industries and it makes recruitment from educational institutions and invests in terrorism from their financial institutions which also must be stopped. The government should keep in mind that those Jamaat-Shibir leaders and activists who have involvement with terrorist activities cannot join any other political parties.

The government must understand that Jamaat has an economic base with which it has managed terrorists and arms and ammunition for carrying out terrorist acts. The government must engage all progressive forces, including social, cultural, and political organisations, to face Jamaat-Shibir ideologically.

The spirit of the great War of Liberation is very important for us, as the people of Bangladesh will be awakened with that spirit, and they will pull the country forward further in the future with the ideals of the Liberation War. Therefore, all will have e to be vigilant against the evil forces and distortion of the victory of the War of Liberation.
