Jamaat Ameer has militant link: CTTC

A Dhaka Court on Tuesday placed Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer DrShafiqur Rahman, who was arrested for his alleged involvement in militancy, on a seven-day remand.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury passed the order. Earlier, police produced him before the court, seeking a 10-day remand.

The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP)  detainedDrShafiqur Rahman from Bashundhara Residential area in the capital early Tuesday.

Later, they showed him arrested in the case against his son DrRafat Chowdhury filed with Jatrabari Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

CTTC Chief Additional Police Commissioner MdAsaduzzaman at a press conference at DMP Media Centre said, Jamaat Ameer had supported his son's militant activities in various ways. That is why we arrested him.

Shafiqur Rahman knew about his son's involvement with the new militant organisation and he assisted his son and other militants.

CTTC arrested DrRafat from Sylhet on November 9 for his alleged involvement in militancy.

At that time, CTTC Chief Additional Police Commissioner MdAsaduzzamansaid that  three members of Ansar Al Islam were arrested from Sayedabad area in capital Dhaka on November 1.

The arrestees were --Sejadul Islam SahabTanim alias Isa alias Arafat alias Anwar alias Anbir, 24, MdJahid Hasan Bhuiyan, 21, and Syed Riaz Ahmed, 22.

During interrogation, they told police that they all joined Ansar Al Islam through DrRafat, the Sylhet region chief coordinator of the banned militant outfit, he said.

The trio also gave their statement in court on November 6 under Section 164 where they disclosed the names of Jamaat Ameer's son and other associates, Asaduzzaman said.

In continuation of this, DrRafat was arrested from Sylhet, the official added.

The CTTC chief also said DrRafat has links with ArakanRohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) and Rohingya Solidarity Organisation (RSO).

CTTC, the elite unit of DMP’s anti-militancy operation alleged that ShafiqurRahman was instigating militancy in the country.

CTTC disclosed that Rafat is the Sylhet regional coordinator of Al-Qaeda-inspired militant outfit Ansar Al Islam.

He was persuading young people to leave their homes for joining so-called jihad.

Asaduzzaman had also said the CTTC unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police is investigating  whetherJamaat has any connection with the new militant outfit Jama'atulAnsar Fil HindalSharqiya.
