Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) Theatre staged two performances of the political satire Narok Gulzar in tribute to the legendary playwright and actor Manoj Mitra, who passed away on November 12, 2024. The shows were held on November 20 at the IUB auditorium and November 23 at Daffodil International University (DIU) as part of the Tarar Chaturdoshi Theatre Festival.

The production, IUB Theatre’s 22nd, was directed by Shamim Sagar and co-directed by Saiful Islam. The play, a satirical exploration of socioeconomic and political issues, captivated audiences with its humor and profound messages.

Manoj Mitra, born on December 22, 1938, in Dhulihar, Satkhira, was a celebrated figure in South Asian theatre, film, and television. Beginning his theatre career in Kolkata in 1957, he also taught philosophy and later headed the Department of Drama at Rabindra Bharati University. Known for his poetic and contemporary dialogue, Mitra’s works blend literary and dramatic brilliance.

Momtaz Parvin, Lecturer of Media and Communication at IUB and Coordinator of IUB Theatre, remarked, “Manoj Mitra’s plays are as much literature as they are theatre. His poetic expressions bring contemporary relevance, particularly in historical and mythological contexts.”

Director Shamim Sagar highlighted the play’s satirical approach, stating, “The humor and underlying messages were carefully balanced to engage and enlighten the audience.”

The cast featured IUB student actors, including Md. Basitullah Khan, Anika Bushra Shoshi, and Abdullah Al Mahin Siam. Production management was led by Sowhardra Paul.

The performance showcased a fusion-driven portrayal of heaven and hell, enhanced by meticulous direction and dynamic acting, leaving a lasting impression on the audience. Narok Gulzar stood as a fitting tribute to the legacy of Manoj Mitra.
