Italy has withdrawn the entry embargo for Bangladeshi nationals who have valid staying permits.

The European country has also asked those whose permits have expired to apply for a visa.

“Another partially good news in Italian front. At our request, Flight embargo has been withdrawn for Bangladeshis with valid Italian stay permits,” Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said in a whatsapp message circulated to the media.

He said the expatriate Bangladeshis with Italian residence permit, who have been stuck here due to coronavirus and got their stay permits expired, can apply for Italian visa here.

The Italian mission here will check the antecedents of the Italian stay permit expired Bangladeshi nationals and then they will be issued visas, he said.

“Italian Ambassador said that they will try to complete the police checking in an expeditious manner,” said Dr Momen.

The foreign minister clarified that Italy still will not issue regular visas.

“This withdrawal of flight embargo is only for those with valid stay permits (and expired stay permits, subject to approval by Italian authorities),” he said.

Earlier, the foreign minister said Italy would not allow Bangladeshi citizens to enter territory till December 31, due to the “previous behaviour” of Bangladeshi expatriates and fear of a possible second wave of Covid-19.

After Italian government’s decision the foreign minister had put his effort to convince Italian government to change their decision regarding entry of expatriate Bangladeshis to Italy, the foreign ministry said.
