‘It’s up to BCB to decide’ - Mahmudullah on captaincy future

Bangladesh T20I skipper Mahmudullah has seen both sides of the coin. Ahead of the T20 World Cup, Mahmudullah was seen attending several interviews where he opened up on Bangladesh's chances in the tournament following victories over Australia and New Zealand at home. Post their disappointing campaign in the Super 12 stages, Mahmudullah was asked if he would step down as skipper if needed.

“It is not in my hands and it is up to BCB to decide (regarding captaincy),” Mahmudullah said after Bangladesh’s disastrous loss against Australia on Thursday.

“From my side I tried my best probably there was (something) lacking in my captaincy and could not bring the best from my team mates. “No, no, I am not thinking of quitting,” he further said when asked if he would quit the format.

Personally I am searching for the answer that what is missing and what we need to do and we all discussed regarding the matter to find out what we lack. We showed dismal performances throughout the tournament except the matches against Sri Lanka and West Indies.

“As a team this is very frustrating. I don’t know the answers and I am still searching for it. Let’s see what happens after returning home. It’s quite complicated at the moment.”

BCB president Nazmul Hasan had come down heavily on the team after their opening defeat to Scotland in the Qualifiers. Nazmul's outburst seemed to have an impact on the dressing room atmosphere and skipper Mahmudullah didn't hold back his emotions after they secured their berth in the Super 12s, stating that it was unfair to raise questions over the players' commitment.

Mahmudullah reiterated that it was just an emotional outburst and pointed out that things were fine between the players and the board. “I admit that I got emotional and that’s why I probably reacted in that manner in the press conference,” he pointed out.

“I think there is no gap between the board and us. Being professional cricketers we have to show our performance. And when you cannot perform there will be a lot of talks. We have to focus more on our performances forgetting all the criticism.”
