The English Language Club (ELC) of International Standard University (ISU) organised an inspiring workshop titled ‘Words at Work: Career Paths for English Graduates’ on Monday. The event aimed to break the old belief that studying English only leads to teaching jobs.

Held at the university campus, the programme was graced by Prof. Dr. Abdul Awal Khan, Vice-Chancellor of ISU, as the Chief Guest. Treasurer Prof. H.T.M. Quader Newaz, Advisor to the Department of English Prof. Asad Ullah-al-Hussain, and Chairperson of the Department of English A.S.M. Saadul Quader were present as Special Guests. The session was chaired by Syeda Bhumika Mahmud, Moderator of ELC and Senior Lecturer at the Department of English.

Successful English graduates shared their career stories at the event. Asif Faisal, Deputy Manager of Communications at BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health, highlighted how language shapes global understanding. He said, “Learning a language is not just about communication; it’s about understanding how a culture thinks.”

Nafiur Ahmed, Project Manager at creative agency 4 Dimension, explained how combining language skills with strategic thinking opened doors for him in public policy and digital media. “An English degree, when paired with technical and soft skills, creates diverse job opportunities,” he noted.

Shaon Arafat, a translator and sub-editor at The Daily Observer, described how his love for literature led him to professional success. He said, “The English Department teaches us to think deeply and without bias.”

The lively discussions and enthusiastic participation made the event a success, reaffirming ISU’s commitment to preparing students for real-world careers beyond traditional roles.
