Abul Kashem, Jamalpur
Islampur upazila consists of 12 unions and 1 municipality in Jamalpur district. Islampur Upazila Hospital is the only medical center for about 4 lakh people in this extremely poor upazila, which is surrounded by Jamuna and Brakshaputra rivers. The medical center has been plagued by various problems for a long time. In addition to the shortage of doctors, the poor patients are suffering due to the harassment of brokers.
It is known that Islampur Upazila Health Complex was started in 1982 with 31 beds. Last year in 2011, the 31-bed hospital was upgraded to 50 beds due to the efforts of Alhaj Faridul Haq Khan Dulal, the local MP and now the Minister of Religion, during the current government period.
The hospital is expected to have a total of 34 doctors in the setup, including 11 consultant (specialist) doctors. Among them there are 6 specialist doctors and 11 medical officers totaling 17 doctors and 39 nurses. Among them, two doctors are working elsewhere. It has been reported that patients should be treated outdoors from 9 am to 2:30 pm. 3/4 doctors came to that place at 10:30 in the morning and signed the attendance book and left again by 12 o'clock.
The affected patients have complained that these doctors sit in different clinics of the district including the upazila and see patients there constantly. Not only that, even if there are nurses, they are not performing their duties properly. As a result, the admitted patients left without receiving proper medical care as the nurses did not behave well with the patients.
Samira, Ratnana, Aleah, Khalil Sek and Abdur Rahim, patients of the hospital, made the same complaint on February 23. On the other hand, the patients are fed up day by day due to the violence of the brokers. On September 17/23, the local MP, now Minister of Religion Alhaj Md. Faridul Haque Khan, came to the hospital for a surprise visit and expressed his anger after seeing the poor condition.
Meanwhile, in the upazila Jamuna-Brahmaputra river-bank area, Dwipchar Jor Doba of Sapdhari Union, Uttar Jordoba, Char Chengania, Kasari Doba, Kathapur, Deer Catch of Kulkandi Union, Jigatla, Char Berkusha, Char Kulkandi, Sindurtali of Belgacha Union, Barul, Mannia Char, Shildah , Nandan Para, Char Nandan Para, Goaler Char, Charputimari and Char Gwalini of about 40 villages of Chinaduli Union, including the extremely poor, low middle class people living in the pasture area, come from far and wide and are deprived of good medical care every day without getting a doctor at the right time.
Apart from this, patients are constantly sent to different clinics because ambulances, X-ray machines, ECG machines are broken on various pretexts. There, patients have to pay high fees for X-ray, ECG tests.
On the other hand, as soon as you enter the gate of the hospital, you have to fall into the grip of the dalads.
The brokers are getting busy to fill their pockets by dividing the common patients by promising benefits in the name of service. He has been deprived of proper medical care by not getting a doctor on time for treatment.
So Sudhijan is seeking the foresight and intervention of higher authorities.
In this regard, Islampur Upazila Health Officer Dr. MA Taher asked about the violence of brokers, ambulance, X-ray, ECG being damaged, he said, it is not correct that the ambulance, X-ray, ECG are damaged in the hospital.
However, I informed the higher authorities about the shortage of doctors. Tell them about the violence of the brokers.
