Construction work on a new drain is underway on both sides of the road from Dinajpur Railway Station to Lilir intersection of Dinajpur city. It has been alleged that a group of miscreants are stealing iron rods from the old drain by breaking the concrete slabs.
Local witnesses said that even though this incident happened in front of the responsible officials and employees of the municipality, they are mysteriously playing a silent role. This is causing a huge loss of revenue to the government.
Several witnesses, who did not wish to be named, said that the city's Abdur Rahim Supermarket is a property of the Waqf State. Its owner, Towakkur Rahim alias Saem and his wife Keya Parveen have been accused of involvement in the stealing using local scoundrels.
According to the witness, the slabs of the municipal drain in front of the first gate of the market are being broken and the iron rods inside are being sold, and some of the rods are being stored in a godown on the third floor of the market.
According to sources, the old drain slabs are the property of the municipality. After these slabs are removed during the construction of the new drain, they are supposed to be under the supervision of the municipality. But ignoring that rule, the slabs are being broken and their valuable iron rods are being stolen in broad daylight. It has created intense anger among the locals.
Dinajpur Municipality Executive Engineer Md Minarul Islam Khan said, “The matter will be investigated and necessary measures will be taken”
