A large number of investors have increased their investments gradually at Adamjee EPZ at Siddhirganj of Narayanganj. It was learned that, Adamjee EPZ succeeded greatly in increasing investment, exporting of goods and creating employmentdue to pragmatic steps by the government and the EPZ authorities.
The EPZ was established in the place which once housed the Adamjee Jute Mills in 2006. In 2005-'06 fiscal year, the EPZ earns four million US$ whereas the earning in 2020-2021 increased to 558.05 million US$. The total export-amount from the EPZ so far was 5452.31 million US dollars.
The Adamjee EPZ is established with 229 industrial plots on 245.12 acres of land. Until October 2020, 51 industrial units were in operation and 16 industrial units were under processing. So far, a total of 51,605 persons have been employed in the industries of which 66 percent are females.
Of the total industries, 26 are fully owned by foreign investors and 13 are local.
The EPZ mainly produces Garments, Garments’ accessories, leather and leather made shoes, seat cover of cars, sweaters, metallic goods, jewelleries, OPC drums, chemical and fertilisers, knitting and textiles accessories etc. Foreign investors from Great Britain, South Korea, India, Japan, Mauritius, Singapore, China, Canada, Spain, Germany, Hong Kong, Malaysia, British Virgin Islands, Netherland, USA, Kuwait, Ukraine and Romania have set up and running industries in the EPZ.
Both local and foreign entrepreneurs are still waiting to establish several more industries in the EPZ with an estimated investment of US$ 45.45 million and an employment opportunity for 2084 persons.
Nazma Binte Alamgir, General Manager (Public Relations) of BEPZA informed that, “As per the government’s policy to develop socio-economic condition of the country, living standard, alleviation poverty and flourish the industries, the decision to set up EPZs was taken. Hence, the government took the decision to set up Adamjee EPZ at the place of the closed Adamjee Jute Mills”.
She further mentioned that, “The activities of import and export of Adamjee EPZ have been brought under automation and strict security of the zone has been ensured. A labour-friendly environment has been prevailing in Adamjee EPZ”.
