Investigation has started 10 days after the attack on Narsingdi district jail, setting fire, fleeing of prisoners, and looting of arms and bullets on July 19 during the student movement for reform of quota system in government jobs.
On Sunday morning, all the members of the inquiry committee visited the Narsingdi district jail together. They visited the entire prison, including the damaged residences, convict cells, units and prison hospitals.
After visiting the prison, convener of the investigation committee and joint secretary of the security service department of the Ministry of Home Affairs Dr Farooq Ahmed told reporters that for the sake of fair investigation, the details of the incident are being known by talking to the witnesses of various professions.
In response to the question of the journalists whether there was any negligence on the part of the prison authorities in this incident, he said, “This is also a subject of investigation. Because among the tasks of this investigation team, the reason for the attack in the prison and whether there is any negligence of any responsibility are significant.”
“The investigation team has been asked to complete the probe within 10 days and submit the report. As a part of this, investigation work has started in full swing. It is hoped that it will be possible to submit the report within the stipulated time. However, if the work is not completed within the allotted time, it may take a few days,” he said.
Other members of the investigation committee are Narsingdi District Administration Additional District Magistrate Tazwar Akram Sakapi Ibne Sazzat, DIG Prison Md Sagir Mia, Special Branch Police Superintendent Mohammad Mahmudul Kabir, Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) KM Shahidul Islam Sohag and member secretary Mohammad Abu Saeed Mollah, deputy secretary of Security Services Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
After visiting the jail, the members of the investigation committee spoke to people from various professions for the purpose of investigation at Narsingdi Deputy Commissioner's conference room.
On July 19, miscreants attacked some public and private institutions in Narsingdi during the anti-quota and reform movement of the students. Among them, 826 prisoners, including nine militants, escaped during the attack on Narsingdi district jail. A total of 85 weapons and around 7,000 rounds of bullet were looted from the prison. However, 45 weapons and 1,091 rounds of bullet have been recovered so far by law enforcers. Out of 826 prisoners, 481 have surrendered so far.
