A Dhaka court on Sunday placed Hasanul Haq Inu, president of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) and former information minister, on a four-day remand in connection with the death of Khalid Hasan Saifullah, an 11th-grade student, in Lalbagh on July 18.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehera Mahbub granted the remand after the investigation officer, Akkas Miah, a sub-inspector at Lalbagh Police Station, produced Inu before the court with a seven-day remand plea. Prior to this, Inu was formally shown arrested in the case following an application submitted by the IO.

During the hearing, pro-BNP lawyers protested, chanting slogans and calling for Inu’s execution.

In a separate case, Inu was also presented before another Dhaka court on Sunday, linked to the death of truck driver Md Sujan during quota reform protests on July 20. This case was filed at Mohammadpur Police Station.

In the remand prayer, the IO stated that Inu had knowledge of the killing and needed to be interrogated to uncover crucial details and identify other fugitives involved in the crime.

The defense, represented by lawyer Muhibur Rahman Mihir, sought bail and requested the remand be canceled, arguing that Inu had no involvement in the killing. However, the magistrate denied the defense’s plea and granted the remand to question Inu further about the murder.

On August 22, Rafiqul Islam, the father of Khalid Hasan Saifullah, filed a case with Lalbagh Police Station implicating Hasina, Inu, and 146 others.
