Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JASAD) President Hasanul Haq Inu, former State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak, and former MP from Manikganj-2 Momtaz Begum, have been shown arrested in separate cases filed over protest-related violence in Ashulia.
On Thursday (July 24), Senior Judicial Magistrate Tazul Islam Sohag of Dhaka passed the order following hearings, directing their remand to jail custody.
Inu and Palak were shown arrested in connection with the alleged killing of Russel Gazi (27) during an anti-discrimination protest on August 5, 2024, in the Gazirchat area of Ashulia.
According to the case, Russel was shot, allegedly by ruling party activists and later died at Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar.
Separately, Momtaz Begum was shown arrested in two cases, one over the killing of garment trader Moniruzzaman and another for the attempted murder of Farhad Hossain, who was critically injured by gunfire during the same protest. Farhad later filed a case on September 29, 2024, as the complainant.
The arrests come amid heightened political tensions and renewed scrutiny over the handling of last year’s protest crackdown in Ashulia. Investigations into these high-profile cases are ongoing.
