Nobel Peace laureate Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus was named chief adviser of interim government on Tuesday, a day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country following a violent crackdown on a student-led uprising. Dr. Yunus was appointed to the post by President Mohammed Shahabuddin after he held meetings with the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and chiefs of three services.
The names of other members to the interim government would be finalised in consultation with other political parties of the country anytime. As the country is passing through a deep crisis it was needed to form an interim government.
The parliament has been dissolved and an interim government will run the country. We think the interim government will do everything to run the country in a smooth way following the fall of Sheikh Hasina government. All believe the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus will establish the rule of law and ensure law and order in the country.
Bangladesh witnessed the ‘autocratic’ Awami League government that had unleashed a reign of terror across the country in the last 15 years and six months.
They (Awami League government) pushed the country towards an extreme conflict by providing its cadres with arms to suppress the movement by killing and torturing the students and people.
It is their (interim government)
sacred duty to ensure a safe, happy,
beautiful and prosperous
Bangladesh for the new generation
They had introduced the culture of forced disappearance, killing and lawlessness. They turned the entire country into a battleground by unleashing terror to kill and repress students and common people, after failing to suppress what has turned into a mass movement.
Country’s people, especially those, who opposed the Awami League government’s misdeeds and misrules, were repressed, tortured, humiliated and oppressed in many ways.
All know Awami League usurped power by staging a farcical election in the same way as they did during the last two elections. They did everything to cling on to power by manipulating the elections.
We believe the rule of law will be established in line with the provisions of the Constitution. The country will be freed from the situation of not getting justice.
The elements, who will try to obstruct our students’ hard-earned victory, must be dealt with severely. We believe Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus led interim government will establish good governance, social justice, transparency and accountability.
It is their (interim government) sacred duty to ensure a safe, happy, beautiful and prosperous Bangladesh for the new generation. The interim government will have to be more cautious in order to establish the rule of law in the country. Only then justice for all sections of people will be ensured in our country.
