An inter-ministerial working committee has been formed to examine and consider the proposals received from the Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) regarding reopening the closed jute mills.
It has been proposed to reopen the mills following rent-based lease system under private management.
Recently, an order has been issued by the Ministry of Textiles and Jute to form this committee.
The committee will examine and finalise the draft notification for inviting tenders, expressions of interest, proposals for reopening of closed mills of BJMC.
The committee will also give advice on disposing of the proposals received against the published notification. At the same time, the committee will make recommendations on the measures / actions to be taken to protect the government interest in the management of the mills under private management and will expedite the activities in this regard if applicable.
The committee may, if necessary, include experienced and knowledgeable persons in the relevant field. Members may be honored to participate in committee meetings. The order states that BJMC will provide secretarial assistance to the committee.
Since July 1 last year, the government has closed 25 jute mills operated under the BJMC. At the same time, 24,609 permanent workers working in jute mills were also given termination of employment through Golden Handshake by providing gratuity, provident fund (PF) and leave cash.
At the same time, the government informed that the closed mills of BJMC will be reopened on an urgent basis by modernizing and restructuring the production system of jute products.
In this context, a policy-making committee headed by Textiles and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Ghazi was formed to ensure proper use of other properties including re-opening of jute mills.
