‘Intelligent Transport System’ to ensure road safety

Ecnec approves 6 projects involving Tk 7019 cr

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) has approved six projects worth Tk 7018.73 crore including the Intelligent Transport System project to ensure road safety.

The approval came from the Ecnec meeting held on Tuesday with its chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

The premier joined the meeting virtually from her official residence in Ganabhaban while ministers, state ministers, planning commission members and secretaries concerned attended it from the NEC Conference Room in the city's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Planning Minister MA Mannan said, "A total of six projects were approved involving an overall estimated cost of Tk 7018.73 crore. Out of this, Tk 4,362.63 crore will be spent from government funds, Tk 269.62 crore from implementing agencies and Tk 2,386.48 crore from foreign loans."

State Minister for Planning Dr Shamsul Alam, planning commission members and secretaries concerned were present at the briefing.

The Planning Minister said electronic control management system will be installed on the road. This system will ensure road safety as we do not obey the law, he mentioned.

"It will be installed experimentally from Mayor Hanif flyover to Padma Bridge. After that, if we get success, the grand project will be taken all over the country," he added.

However, the Roads and Highways Department under the Road Transport and Highways Division will implement the project by December 2025.

Among the approved projects in Ecnec, the cost of Seamans Hostel Complex building construction project has been estimated at Tk 59.14 crore.

The cost of Improving the Rehabilitation and Safety on National Highways Corridors of Bangladesh by Introduction of Intelligent Transport System project has been estimated at Tk 122 crore.

The cost of the project titled "Upgrading the road from Ghonapara to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's mausoleum (including Sheikh Lutfar Rahman Bridge approach) to proper standard and width" has been estimated at Tk 347 crore.

Besides, the cost of the river bank conservation project in Vedarganj upazila of Shariatpur district to prevent erosion of Padma river has been estimated at Tk 552.49 crore.

The cost of Palash Urea Fertilizer project in Ghorashal has been estimated at Tk 5,039.30 crore.

The cost of canal restoration, renovation and aesthetic environment creation project has been estimated at Tk 898.73 crore.
