Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, who was critically injured in a gun attack on 12 December, has passed away while undergoing treatment at Singapore General Hospital.

The information was confirmed in a post on his verified Facebook page on Thursday. The matter was also announced on the Facebook page of Inqilab Mancha.

The post stated, “In confronting Indian imperialism, Allah has accepted the great revolutionary Osman Hadi as a martyr.”

Interim government Adviser for Cultural Affairs Mostafa Sarwar Farooki also confirmed the news in a post on his verified page, writing: “Our brother Hadi has set out on an eternal journey. Like Abrar and Abu Sayed, Hadi will live on even more strongly in the heart of Bangladesh, even in his absence.”

Earlier on Wednesday night, Singapore's Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan visited Hadi at the hospital and later called Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus at 9:40pm and informed him that Hadi's condition was very critical.

Hadi, who was a potential Dhaka-8 candidate for the upcoming national election, was shot in the head on Friday (12 December) in the Old Paltan area of the capital. An assailant fired at Osman Hadi from a motorcycle that had been following him from behind while he was travelling in a battery-powered rickshaw to conduct electioneering.

He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he underwent emergency brain surgery due to massive brain injury.

Doctors at DMCH described his condition as extremely critical, noting that the bullet entered above his left ear and exited through the right side of his head, affecting the brain stem.

He was later transferred to Evercare Hospital for advanced treatment. On Monday, Osman Hadi was flown to Singapore by air ambulance for advanced treatment. Accompanying him are his brother as well as Bangladeshi physicians and nurses.

Law enforcement agencies have identified a man named Faisal Karim Masud as the shooter in the attack on Osman Hadi. Police and RAB have found that his associate Alamgir Sheikh was riding the motorcycle used in the attack. Several sources involved in the investigation said the two illegally crossed the border and fled to India.

So far, police and RAB have detained and arrested 14 people in connection with the attack on Osman Hadi. Among them are Faisal’s father Md Humayun Kabir (70), mother Mosa Hasi Begum (60), wife Saheda Parvin Samia, and brother-in-law Wahid Ahmed Shipu.

Others arrested include Md Nuruzzaman Nomani alias Ujjal, Md Kabir, Abdul Hannan, Md Hiron, Md Razzak, Faisal’s girlfriend Maria Akter, and Simiron Dio and Sanjay Chisim, who are known as human traffickers operating along the Haluaghat border.
