PK Halder, the main accused and fugitive in the NRB Global Bank money laundering case, who was arrested in India, was beaten by an inmate in Kolkata’s Presidency Jail.

According to the Indian media reports, PK Halder’s lawyer Biswajit Manna raised the matter before the court on Tuesday.

He said that PK Halder was attacked and beaten twice in the jail. The lawyer highlighted this information when 6 people, including PK Halder, were brought to court after 49 days of jail custody in a financial scam in Bangladesh, the media reports said.

According to the lawyer, the accused’s name is Hafizul Molla. He is a resident of Basirhat in West Bengal of India, near Satkhira border of Bangladesh. Last July, he was accused of hiding in the Kalighat house of state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The security guards arrested him from inside the Chief Minister’s house and a case was filed against him with Kalighat police station. Later, a Special Investigation Team was formed to investigate the incident.

The lawyer also said that first time PK Haldar was attacked and beaten up in the Presidency Jail on April 18. PK Halder and Hafizul Mollah were in the same jail cell. At that time, a fight broke out between them. At this time, the ward guard came and stopped them. Later, PK Halder was shifted to another cell of the jail.

He also said that after that, on April 22, when PK Halder was reading a newspaper before going to take a bath outside the cell, Hafizul suddenly attacked him again. PK Kalder was injured in both incidents. He was given first aid. But the injury was not serious.

On Tuesday, PK Halder’s fund embezzlement case came up in the Special CBI Court-3 of Judge Subhendu Sahar. The judge asked PK Halder whether he was satisfied with the new ward of the prison where he was transferred. Halder expressed his satisfaction.

Arijit Chakraborty, the lawyer of the investigating agency ‘Enforcement Directorate (ED)’ said that PK Halder was attacked and beaten inside the prison. He was injured in that incident. Later, realising the seriousness of the incident, PK Halder was shifted to another ward of the jail.

The real reason behind the attack on PK Haldar is still unknown. In this regard, the lawyer of the accused said that the prison authorities are investigating. They can tell about the motive of the attack. No new information was received from the accused.

After hearing the statements of both the parties, the City Sessions Court of Kolkata ordered the six accused including PK Haldar to appear in court again on June 7.

It is to be noted that PK Halder was arrested on May 14, 2022 in Kolkata. His brother Pranesh Halder, Swapan Mistry alias Swapan Maitra, Uttam Mistry alias Uttam Maitra, Imam Hossain alias Imon Halder and Amana Sultana alias Sharmi Halder along with rest of the accused were also arrested.

On July 11 last year, the ED submitted charge sheet against the accused in the Kolkata court. In the case of anti-money laundering and anti-corruption act, the charge was formed in the name of the six accused.

At present, five male accused including accused PK Haldar are in the Presidency Jail. On the other hand, the only female accused is lodged in Alipore Central Jail.
