With the theme of 'Samajsebay Garbo Desh, Smart Hobe Bangladesh', the National Social Service Day-2024 was observed here in a befitting manner on Tuesday. In association with the Khulna district administration, the Department of Social Service (SSD) arranged a discussion and award distribution ceremony at the conference room of its divisional office here marking the day.
Md. Helal Mahmud Sharif, Divisional Commissioner of Khulna was the Chief Guest of the programme.
In his speech, the chief guest said the Department of Social Services is working for the welfare of the backward sections of the society. It is working to strengthen the social safety net of the country.
“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the scope of social security has increased. The government has provided various allowances including the increase of disability allowance, widow allowance and freedom fighters’ allowance”, he added.
Meanwhile, the SSD is playing an important role by implementing 54 social security programmes.
On the occasion of the National Social Service Day, Md. Helal Mahmud Sharif distributed wheelchairs to five disabled persons, six crests to six successful voluntary organizations and nine officers and employees of the department were awarded crests.
Chaired by Pulak Kumar Mondol, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Sushanta Sarkar, Additional Superintendent of Police and Additional Director of Divisional Social Services Officer Sameer Mallick also spoke as special guests on the Deputy Director of the District Social Service Office Khan Motaher Hossain delivered welcome speech at the function.
Among others, Md. Alamgir Kabir, freedom fighter Sardar Mahabubar Rahman, Swapan Kumar Guha, Executive Director of Rupantar Hiranmoy Mandal and representatives of various voluntary organizations also spoke on the occasion.

Government officials and development activists came up with the observation while addressing a post-rally discussion on the issues related to social services on Tuesday.
The Department of Social Services (DSS) and District administration jointly organised the discussion at the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) office in observance of the National Social Service Day-2024.
On the occasion, blankets, sewing machines and wheelchairs were distributed among the helpless and physically challenged people.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Kolyan Chowdhury, Civil Surgeon Dr Abu Sayeed Muhammad Faruque, DSS Additional Director Debashish Sarker and Assistant Superintendent of Police ANM Niamat Ullah also spoke on the occasion.
Jamalpur Correspondent adds: The National Social Service Day was celebrated in Jamalpur in the light of the motto 'We will build the country for social service, Bangladesh will be smart'. On the occasion of the day, on Tuesday a colorful procession came out from Bakultala square of the district town. The procession went round the city and the discussion meeting was held at the conference room of the District Commissioner. Deputy Commissioner Md Shafiur Rahman spoke as the chief guest.
Additional District Commissioner Md. Additional Superintendent of Police Masood Anwar, Deputy Director of District Social Services Office Raju Ahmed, Representative of Civil Surgeon Dr. Kauchara, Senior Information Officer Jalal Uddin, Director of Human Resource Development of Development Association Jahangir Salim, Executive Director of Tarun Kalyan Organization Khorshed Alam among others spoke in the discussion meeting held under the chairmanship of Moktar Hossain. , Arifa Yasmin Mayuri, President of the Staircase Social Welfare Organization, Monira Moni, Borrower of the Department of Social Services, Humayun Kabir on behalf of the disabled people and others.

In his welcome speech, Deputy Director of District Social Services Office, Raju Ahmed said that Social Services Department is working tirelessly to strengthen the social circle with comprehensive and multifaceted programs in the welfare and development of the poor, neglected, backward, poor, orphans, autistic, disabled and backward people of the country.District Commissioner Md. Shafiur Rahman said that the contribution of social services department to the welfare of marginalized people and backward people in the society is unique. To carry forward the social service activities, everyone has to play a role from their position. Concerned persons should be more careful and aware in this case so that the allowance goes to the real beneficiaries.
