India’s Supreme Court on Friday ordered the immediate transfer of Prateek Hajela, the man who spearheaded the process of updating the controversial National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.
Hajela, a 1995 Indian Administrative Service officer who is the Coordinator of the NRC, would be shifted to the Indian heartland state of Madhya Pradesh on deputation, a bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi ordered.
The Indian government's top law officer Attorney General K K Venogupal, wanted to know from the bench whether there was any reason for the transfer.
"Yes. There is a reason," said the Chief Justice.
But the apex court order does not specify the reason.
