Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra is coming to Dhaka for the foreign office consultation (FOC) with his counterpart Masud Bin Momen.

According to the foreign ministry officials, he will come to Dhaka from Kathmandu on Tuesday night.

The bilateral talk will take place on Wednesday. He will also call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen.

This will be his first bilateral visit to Bangladesh. Last year in April he accompanied the then foreign minister S Jaishankar.

During the talk, both sides will discuss water management issues, power sector cooperation, trade barriers, and progress of the Indian line of credit, apart from regional and global issues.

They will review the progress made towards further consolidating the historic relations between the two neighbours.

The last FOC took place in New Delhi in January last year

This year India assumed the presidency of the G20. Bangladesh has been invited as a guest country. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to attend the G20 summit in New Delhi from September 9-10.

The foreign minister will attend G20 foreign ministers meet on March 1-2.

The historical relations began during the 1971 liberation war when Indian soldiers fought for Bangladesh.

Vinay Kwatra was appointed as India’s 34 Foreign Secretary on April 4, 2022. He succeeded Harsh Vardhan Shringla on April 30.

Kwatra is a 1988 batch IFS officer.  He has served as a diplomat for over 32 years and is credited for improving the India-Nepal ties in his tenure as the ambassador before taking up the charge of the foreign secretary.
