India on Friday said it is encouraged by the overwhelming response from Bangladeshi citizens seeking to travel to India, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening people-to-people ties and deepening the longstanding friendship between the two neighbouring countries.

In a message, the High Commission of India in Dhaka said it remains focused on improving visa services and making the application process more convenient for travelers.

“We are truly encouraged by the overwhelming response from those wishing to travel to India for various purposes,” the mission said.

“As we continue to expand our visa services and make the application process smoother and more convenient, we sincerely appreciate your patience and cooperation.”

Nearly two years after suspending tourist visas, India resumed issuing tourist visas for Bangladeshi citizens from June 28 in a move aimed at further strengthening bilateral people-to-people connections.

Newly appointed Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi announced the decision following a visit to the Indian Visa Application Centre on June 25.

Describing visa services as a top priority, Trivedi expressed optimism that the resumption would benefit ordinary citizens and further reinforce bilateral ties.

Visa services will continue through five centres located in Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chattogram, Sylhet and Khulna.

Officials hope the move will facilitate travel for tourism, medical treatment, education and business, while strengthening the historic ties between Bangladesh and India.
