Independent candidate wins Jhenaidah municipality polls

An independent candidate Qayum Shahrier Zahedi Hizol has won the mayoral position in Jhenaidah municipality polls held over 11 years. He bagged 25,753 votes with the symbol pof cocooanut tree, while his nearest candidate belongs to ruling Awami league (AL) contesting with th symbol boat bagged 18,539 votes. Four mayoral candidates, 19 ward councilor positions and 64 fought for the councilor position in the polls.

The voting was started at sharp eight in the morning and continued till 4pm where no untoward incident took place during the polls hours. 

Many of the voters cast their franchise through 47 centres ignoring the mild rainfall frequently. 18 upazila nirbahi officers, 47 executive magistrates, three judicial magistrates, five platoons of border guard Bangladesh, 480 police personnel, 423 Ansar and VDP personnel, nine mobile courts including three striking forces of rapid action battalion (RAB) had furnished their duty to maintain law and order. 

Further, the district and police administration and election commission (EC) officials had monitored the activities. 

­EC sources said the election of the municipality was deferred several times due to some area dispute and legal complications when the tenure was ended over six years ago.
