November 28, 1821, marks a significant moment in Panama’s history—the day it declared independence from Spain. This landmark was a result of impulsive revolution and a deliberate, peaceful transition that demonstrated the power of unity, foresight and strategic diplomacy.

The journey toward independence began with the ‘Primer Grito de Independencia’ on November 10 in the city of Villa de Los Santos. This bold declaration sparked a ripple effect, inspiring revolution throughout the Panamanian landscape. Revolutionary leaders in Panama orchestrated a bloodless victory by negotiating with Spanish troops by November 28, using financial reasons to secure their compliance. This tactful approach avoided unnecessary violence and preserved the city’s stability during a critical time.

At the heart of Panama’s independence was a pragmatic leadership that prioritised the country’s long-term security and prosperity. In an open assembly of elites, traders and landowners, the leaders decided to join the newly formed Republic of Gran Colombia under Simón Bolívar. This alliance offered protection from potential Spanish retaliation while ensuring economic continuity through established trade networks. Panama's independence act, signed that day, embodied a break from colonial oppression and a commitment to regional solidarity.

Independence of Panama was merely an end to colonial rule and a strategic step toward establishing its place in a swiftly evolving geopolitical landscape. It stands as a rare example of a peaceful revolution achieved through collaborative wisdom and diplomacy.

Panama celebrates November 28 as a day of pride and reflection, honouring those who fought not with weapons but with strategy and vision. Their legacy is a strong reminder that independence is most enduring when built on unity, foresight and the courage to plan a thoughtful course for the future.
