In the wake up of the outbreak of coronavirus, programmes centring the great Independence Day on March 26, have been minimised as a preventive measure, reports BSS.

Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, the Minister for Home Affairs came up with the announcement on Wednesday after a meeting at the secretariat in presence of top officials of the law enforcement agencies on observing the 'Genocide Day' and the Independence Day.

The minister said that this year’s Independence Day programme will be held on a limited scale. Mass rally or gathering centring March 26 has been discouraged. No cultural programme will be held outdoors on that day.

Besides, measures will be taken to maintain security at Savar National Mausoleum as the President and Prime Minister will go there. The number of guests will be limited there. A special diet will be served in jails, hospitals and orphanages marking the day.

Besides, for the fourth successive year, the government has decided to observe a minute’s 'blackout' programme on the night of March 25, marking the 'Genocide Day'. The ‘blackout’ programme will be observed for one minute from 900pm on March 25, the Home Minister said.

Additional security measures will also be taken on the occasion, said the minister. However, key performance indicators, areas and vehicles will remain out of the purview of the programme, said Asaduzzaman.
