The income from freight trains of Bangladesh Railway, Paksey division, has decreased drastically in recent years. Specially, the income from this sector in 2024 was the lowest in the last four years.
According to the Commercial Department of Paksey Railway Division, the income from the freight trains from January 2024 to September 2024 has decreased to a half compared to the previous years.
From January 2023 to September 2023, a total of 583 freight trains operated under the Railway Paksey division. The total income of railway division from this trasportation was Tk 80 crore. However, in 2024, only 294 freight trains operated from January till September, earning only Tk 50 crore.
Railway sources further informed that, the total income from the freight trains in the Paksey division was Tk 180 core 74 lakh in 2021. The trains then carried goods of 3,54,000 metric tonnes. In 2022, the income dropped to Tk 128 crore while in 2023, the income further dropped to Tk 80 crore only. In 2024, the sector experienced its lowest income, earning only Tk 50 crore.
An Official of Bangladesh Railway West Zone, seeking anonymity, said, due to the increased price of US Dollar, the import of goods has dropped in 2024. At the same time, political unrest and an imbalance in trade with India, meaning that goods are only being imported from India with no export from our side, led to a drastic decline in income, particularly from July to August.
