In the cloak of dear dollar

Various imported products are being sold at high prices on the pretext of rising dollar exchange rates in the country.

Prices of various imported products including branded milk powder, juice, cosmetics, baby diapers and other prices have gone up at least 30 percent or above in the local market.

A 1800 gram milk powder of Lactogen-1 brand which was sold at Tk 2300 to Tk 2400 two months ago is being sold at Tk 2900 to Tk 3000. A Nido 1800 grams powdered milk tin is being sold at Tk 3300 to Tk 3400 which was Tk 2900 to Tk 3000 earlier.

A packet of 30 pieces of foreign brand baby diapers is being sold at an increased price of up to Tk 200. The prices of baby feeders, mum pots and baby carrier bags imported from China and Thailand have been increased by 10 percent to 20 percent.  Gulshan DNCC Market’s wholesale and retail company informed that the price of powdered milk has increased the most due to the increase in dollar. In the last one to two months, lactogen-1 has increased by about Tk 600, and 1800 grams of Lactogen-1 is now being sold at Tk 2900 to Tk 3000, which was earlier Tk 2300 to Tk 2400. Similarly all other product prices have also gone up.

They have also informed that not only imported food items, prices of imported cosmetics and other items have also gone up. As a result, their everyday sale has also been affected.

However, buyers are saying they are becoming victims of dollar price hikes. Many of them said that they have reduced the use of their daily needs but few items for children which are very essential are now hard to buy.

Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection Director General AHM Safiquzzaman said that their market monitoring is continuing. Soon they will conduct a drive on imported goods.
