Imam found dead in mosque’s pond in Sylhet

The body of an imam was recovered from the pond of a mosque of Goainghat upazila in Sylhet Tuesday.

The deceased, Md Alauddin, 40, was the imam of the central jam-e-mosque of Pukash village at Alirgaon union under the upazila. He is from Kuinkuri village in the same upazila, police said.

The mosque governing committee treasurer Selim Ahmad said that the imam went down in the pond of the mosque to take a bath at about 8:30am after keeping his clothes on the entrance of the pond.

He said that the villagers searched him in the neighbouring areas after noticing his clothes but could not find him out.

Later, the villagers recovered the imam’s body from the pond around 9:15am and then they informed the police, Selim added.

Goainghat police station officer-in-charge KM Nazrul Islam confirmed the death incident.

The police rushed to the spot after receiving the news and sent the imam’s body to Sylhet Osmani medical college hospital for post-mortem examination, the OC said.

The police officer said that they were trying to unearth the mystery behind the death incident.
