ILO, EU launch awareness campaign to rebrand tech education

Khulna Mohila Polytechnic Institute organized  ”Campus Open Day’’ as part of the TVET awareness campaign on Tuesday.  European Union funded International Labour Organization’s Skills 21 project supported the Directorate of Technical Education to develop a campaign strategy for its TVET institutes to popularize TVET education. 

The campaign consists of three dimensions: community mobilisation, institute-level activities, and activities on the digital platform. The activities taking place at the community level include parents’ meeting, hotspot activities, etc. These activities gathered thousands of members of the public who received information about TVET. 

Furthermore posters, booklet, information boards and announcements reached an estimated 10,000 direct menmbers members of the public in the Khulna.

On ‘’Campus Open Day’’ Khulna Mohila Polytechnic institute furthermore organised a rally, a job fair, a skills show, skills competitions, career discussions and capacity-building workshops for the current and potential TVET students.

The Senior Secretary of the Technical and Madrasah Education Division (TMED) of the Ministry of Education inaugurated the Campus Open Day.  The Counselor of the European Union, the ILO High Official, and the Additional Divisional Commissioner of Sylhet were also present at the event. 

‘’Campus Open Day’’ was open to all members of the public. Current TVET students showcased their skills, and the successful graduates told their stories to the audience to inspire others to enrol in TVET education. The TVET institute’s career and job placement officer furthermore informed interested youth and their parents about the career paths resulting from TVET education. The local 19 industries  joined the jobs fair,  And collected more than 1500 CVs from interested youth, and held interviews and written tests to recruit qualified youth for vacancies. 

Ms Jurate Smalskyte Merville, Counsellor, Team Leader- Education, Human Development and Economic Management of European Union Delegation said, ‘’The European Union appreciates TMED’s efforts to institutionalise the awareness-raising campaign undertaken by the TVET institutes, local officials and employers in order to increase TVET enrolment and skills levels of young people.  We therefore encourage the Government to continue its work to ensure that this campaign is emulated in other TVET institutes.”  

During the coming months campaign activities will take place in Bagerhat, Feni, Chattogram, Jamalpur, Mymensingh and Dhaka.  This campaign will raise awareness among young prospective students who will have passed grade eight and those who have completed their Senior Certificate but are still not in Employment, Education or Training to seize opportunities to acquire post-school qualifications at TVET institute.
