In the Jalilnagar area of Raozan, footpaths in front of the "Apon Bari" restaurant have been unlawfully occupied by makeshift shops, turning pedestrian walkways into thriving business spots. Various stalls—including those selling fried snacks, fuchka, chotpoti, fruits, and children's clothes—have been set up, severely inconveniencing pedestrians.
A visit to the area revealed that around 10–12 food stalls have taken over the footpath in Jalilnagar. Traders, using modified vans, run their businesses on public walkways, forcing pedestrians to walk along the busy road due to the complete blockage of the pavement.
Moreover, unauthorised vehicle parking along the Rangamati Highway has resulted in frequent traffic congestion and minor accidents. These footpath businesses, particularly crowded from afternoon to evening, are often run under the guise of municipal leaseholders. Allegedly, a group of extortionists collect daily fees of Tk 50–100 from each stall.
A vendor, speaking anonymously, claimed local political figures have been "managed" to allow the stalls to operate. He confirmed paying Tk 50 daily as an unofficial fee. Similar scenarios can be observed in areas like Fakir Hat, Thana Road, and Munshirghata, where goods spill onto the pavement unchecked.
Local resident Mohammad Rashed urged the municipal authorities to take action, saying pedestrians are at risk due to the encroachment.
In response, Raozan Municipality Administrator and Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land), Angching Marma, stated that operations will soon be launched to clear footpaths across market areas.
